How much can you make flipping cars in the UK in 2026?

Car flipping — buying second-hand vehicles and reselling for profit — remains one of the most accessible forms of self-employment in the UK. But the question beginners always ask is: how much can you actually make? The honest answer is: it depends entirely on your buying discipline, your preparation quality, and how quickly you turn over stock.

Typical Margins by Price Band

Net profit (after all costs) per successful flip tends to follow price band patterns:

  • £1,500–£3,000 buys: £200–£600 net per flip. Thin margins but fast capital turnover. Good for beginners building experience.
  • £3,000–£6,000 buys: £500–£1,200 net per flip. The sweet spot. High buyer demand, decent absolute margins, manageable capital risk.
  • £6,000–£12,000 buys: £800–£2,500 net per flip. Stronger margins but longer average sale times and higher capital lock-up.
  • £12,000+ buys: £1,500–£4,000+ potential, but buyer pools thin significantly and holding costs at this price point can be brutal.

A Realistic Monthly Income Scenario

A part-time flipper working from home, flipping 2–3 cars per month in the £3,500–£7,000 band, and selling them within 2–3 weeks each can realistically earn:

2 cars × £700 average net margin: £1,400/month

3 cars × £700 average net margin: £2,100/month

5 cars × £800 average net margin: £4,000/month

Five cars a month with a self-run setup is roughly a full-time income. At this point you are a motor trader, and the legal, insurance, and tax implications are proportionally more significant.

The Real Numbers: A 2026 Case Study

Buy a 2018 Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost (75k miles) for £5,200 from a private seller. Spend £120 on a professional valet, £54 on a fresh MOT, and nothing on repairs (OBD scan clean, cold-start fine). List on AutoTrader at £6,650. Sell in 11 days for £6,400 after one round of negotiation. Costs: VED (6 months, pro-rated at sell: £97), insurance (1 month trade: £45), AutoTrader pitch: £40, travel to view: £18.

Total costs: £5,200 + £120 + £54 + £97 + £45 + £40 + £18 = £5,574. Sale price: £6,400. Net profit: £826. That's an 14.8% return on capital deployed in 11 days.

What Destroys Profitability

  • Unexpected repairs: A car that needs a new clutch (£600–£900 fitted) or a timing belt service (£400–£700) can eliminate the entire margin. Always use a repair buffer and inspect thoroughly before buying.
  • Holding too long: Every week without a sale costs insurance, possible storage, and ties up capital. A price that seemed "strong" at week one should be reduced by week three. Don't be emotionally attached.
  • ULEZ and Clean Air Zones: Buying a non-compliant diesel near London, Birmingham, or Manchester severely restricts your buyer pool and forces discounts. Check ULEZ status before any diesel purchase.
  • Overpaying at auction: Bidding momentum is the enemy of disciplined buying. Set a hard max and walk away. There is always another auction.
  • Ignoring demand seasonality: Convertibles bought in November, 7-seaters bought in August, and high-emission cars bought just before VED renewal season all carry elevated holding-cost risk.

Tax: What You Must Declare

If you're flipping cars with the intent to profit, HMRC considers you a sole trader. Profits above the £1,000 trading allowance are taxable income. You can deduct all legitimate business costs (vehicle purchase, advertising, insurance, travel, repairs) from your gross income to arrive at your taxable profit. At 2 cars a month generating £1,400 net, your annual profit is roughly £16,800 — above the personal allowance, meaning you'll pay Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance. Use an accountant or accounting software from the moment you scale above 2 cars a month.
